I love homemade whipped cream, but whipping cream is so expensive. I also don’t need whipped cream all that often (unless I’m doing a recipe). But I’m going to show you how to make whipped cream with half and half if you are in a pinch. It’s not as totally awesome as whipped cream with whipping cream (hence, the name), but it’s pretty darned good.

Why I Love This Whipped Cream with Half and Half Recipe
This is a super basic recipe, using three ingredients. I always have half and half on hand because I drink it in my coffee. And I also always have butter and powdered sugar on hand because I like to bake. So I don’t need to run out to the store to grab heavy whipping cream.
Homemade whipped cream is so damn delicious. I’m fairly certain it’s all that sugar in there lol. But seriously. So damned delish. Enough said.
How to Make Whipped Cream with Half and Half: The Deets
Half and half has a much lower fat content than heavy whipping cream, so if you used just powdered sugar and half and half, it will deflate rather quickly. You can do it that way, if you run out of butter. (Hello, kid who uses up all my ingredients when she wants to cook something she found on TikTok but then doesn’t tell me she used it all up.)
If you wanted to make it sans butter, you (a) need everything very, very cold … like Frozen cold … and (b) serve it immediately.
Whipped Cream with Half and Half
So damned delish.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup half and half, very cold
- 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- (optional) 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- For best results, chill a metal bowl and whisks for at least one hour.
- Pour all ingredients into the bowl and whip, being careful not to overwhip into butter.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar. It's good to use the standing mixing parts now.
- To serve, put into a piping bag and makes a fun decoration.
Notes
You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less powdered sugar to your taste. The optional vanilla extract adds a delightful flavor.
